Who are The Yes Men?

Mike and Andrew Notorious pranksters, Andy Bichlbaum (right) and Mike Bonanno (left), The Yes Men, have spent most of their adult lives creating fake news, justifying it with the tagline “Sometimes it takes a lie to expose the truth.” Thanks to a network of ultra-capable friends and allies, the Yes Men have infiltrated conferences, produced fake newspapers, and perpetrated various other weirdness in order to expose the wrongdoings of miscellaneous, mostly corporate evildoers.

For decades their antics worked: their fake news got massive amounts of real news coverage for real issues. But with the 2016 presidential election, they watched in horror as fake news dominated real news outright, and nearly half of Americans believed it. How did this come to be? Who makes it? How does social media amplify it? And what are we to do?

The Yes Men will take you on a journey exploring the long and sordid history of fake news, starting in the good old days when it was made mostly by highly paid PR professionals. They’ll move on to the contemporary scene, addressing how Macedonian teens, Russian trolls, and unemployed geeks of all nations took advantage of Facebook and Google business models to help elect Trump.

"The Yes Men are imposters extraordinaire who create a parallel media universe by posing as corporate functionaries, or by aping mastheads and distributing whatever news they see fit to print." Art in America, 2014

"The 20th anniversary of the Bhopal gas tragedy was a day of embarrassment for Dow chemicals and the major news media around the world when the BBC fell victim to a hoax from a man claiming to be a Dow spokesperson who claimed full responsibility for the tragedy and announcing a multi-billion dollar compensation package." Democracy Now!, 2004

"New Yorkers and tourists...were treated to free shaved ice courtesy of Royal Dutch Shell, which was recently given preliminary approval by the Obama administration to drill for oil in the Arctic. The company hauled a chunk of the "last iceberg in existence" to the city to give New Yorkers a "first taste of the last frontier." Rolling Stone, 2015
