Challenge Grant Helps Law Center Meet Financial Obligations

In January, 2004, the Law Center was given the opportunity to accept a challenge grant from a local foundation. The terms are thus: the foundation will provide a 100% match for every dollar in "new money" raised by the Law Center before June 30, 2004 (up to a maximum of $25,000).

"New Money" is defined as:

  • funds from all sources that have not previously provided funding to the Law Center;
  • all member contributions that exceed previous contributions, as well as all funds from new members; and
  • all funds raised by the Board of Directors' fundraising campaign.

That's $25,000 in "new money" + $25,000 in foundation match = $50,000!

This funding will be critical towards helping the Law Center avoid a $100,000 deficit at the end of its fiscal year (June 30). For more information on this deficit, please see the Executive Director's Column.

But we won't reach our $50,000 goal with this grant unless we raise the new money! If you would like to contribute towards this grant, please see our Join Us page. Thanks!

  Energy Bill Musings

--ed. note: as of the posting of this website, the federal omnibus Energy Bill has not been reintroduced on the Senate floor, and is not anticipated to pass in its current state.

The abomination that was the Federal Energy Bill died this November under the weight of its own pork-laden corpulence. The Energy Bill, which was larded with taxpayer giveaways to corporate donors, would have been disastrous for the environment and public health. Among the giveaways was a provision that would have subsidized uranium mining using the in situ leach method. This provision, sponsored by New Mexico Representative Heather Wilson and Senator Pete Domenici, would have indirectly supported the Crownpoint Uranium Project. Although supporters of the bill in the U.S. Senate could not find enough support for the bill in that house of Congress, the Senate leadership has promised to revisit the bill in January.

--Eric Jantz, Staff Attorney

In September, 2003, the Law Center staff took a field trip to Albuquerque to join the "Rally for a Better Energy Bill" in September, adding some street theater to the mix. Top right: Eric Jantz and Earl James perform a skit; middle: the Law Center group photo; and bottom: Wynoma Foster, executive coordinator of ENDAUM speaks out against the uranium subsidies included in the Energy Bill. Thanks to the SouthWest Organizing Project, ENDAUM and the Sierra Club for making the rally such a success!

Farewell to Staff Attorney Heather Anderson

Staff Attorney Heather Anderson is bidding farewell to the Law Center after a very busy three year stint as Staff Attorney -- jumping out of the frying pan and into the fryer as she and her husband welcome their first baby later this year .

Heather served as lead attorney on several Law Center cases, including the U.S. Highway Expansion case (Hondo), the Las Campanas water usage case (Santa Fe), the Oglebay Norton mica cases (Velarde and Picuris Pueblo), and the Triassic Park hazardous waste landfill case, to name a few. Law Center attorneys Eric Jantz and Roderick Ventura have taken on her casework.

Good luck, Heather! (No word yet on when the young Anderson will be able to start an internship with the Law Center...)
